St Kitts is a rather large island with ample fresh water. In earlier times it was a major sugar producer. Most of the refineries are now ruins, but many of the manor houses live on as fine hotels with lovely gardens. |

Cruising along the southwest coast reveals several secluded beaches with excellent snorkeling. At the very tip of the island is the channel that separates St Kitts from Nevis. They are part of one country, but very different islands. Nevis is essentially an extinct volcano with plantations on the slopes and a fringe of sand. The volcano has produced black sand beaches. |

The southern tip of St Kitts did not have a paved road until recently. It is rough country with sheep and goats wandering the steep hills interspersed with wild monkeys and colorful tropical birds. The steep hillsides frequently end in rocky coasts, but sometimes a private beach is tucked into a secluded cove. |
